NanoMath::A Very, Very, Very Small Blog About Math

I am a computing/math instructor at Scottsdale Community College located in Scottsdale, Arizona. I created this blog thinking I'd use it to blog about math, but I haven't gotten around to taking this blog seriously. 3Q'02012 is ending today and I'm thinking about bringing this blog--which had 16 postings on 30 September 02012-- to life.

Goodbye 02012, Hello 02013

I live in Tempe, Arizona, and right now it is 1:00pm MST on 31 December 02012. In otherwords, 02013 starts in less than 12 hours.

I like the number 2013. Because 2013 is an odd number that ends in the prime number 13, I initially thought 2013 was a prime number--it's not. However, 2013 is a sphenic number because it has only three unique prime factors. We can tell relatively quickly 2013 is not prime because of the sum of its digits is evenly divisible by three.

I like the number 2013 because it is a multiple of 61 and like the number 61. 61 is a prime number and I'm looking forward to finding out what life is like when I turn 61 in 5 1/2 years. Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" is one of my favorite albums. I've done a lot of road tripping on US Highway 61. I've also done some road tripping on AZ Highway 61, NE Highway 61, IL Highway 61 and NM Highway 61.

I'll end this posting with a 2012/2013 full moon tidbit. 2012 had 2012%2000+1 full moons and 2013 is going to have 2013%2000-1 full moons.
